Specialist & Toll

Narrow tape prepreg.

Specialty narrow formats for AFP/ATL, filament winding, and engineered structures — processed from your fibers and resins on CDI narrow-tape capability.

The problem with traditional supply

  • High minimums that do not fit development or specialty programs
  • Long lead times and cold-chain / inventory burden for perishable prepreg
  • Slit-tape logistics, edge waste, and “best fit” rolls that do not match the process
  • Limited ability to protect or iterate proprietary resin systems

CDI approach

Customer-supplied inputs, specialty impregnation, and formats matched to the manufacturing method — with optional migration to in-house CD6019 / OnDemand equipment.

Format Dimensional control Shape tolerance Winding Typical use
Towpreg Low N/A Cross wound, no backer Filament winding, pressure bottles, tubulars
Precision Tow Medium ±0.008″ Parallel wound with backer High-pressure cylinders, engineered structures
ShapedTape High ±0.003″ Parallel wound with backer AFP/ATL, machine-paced winding

Tolerances are illustrative brochure figures from the July 17 demo. Fiber size classes commonly discussed: roughly 6k–60k. Resin families include hotmelt epoxy, toughened systems, BMI, cyanate ester, and other specialty chemistries subject to process review.

Equipment counterpart

The same specialty formats are supported on CDI narrow tape equipment for customers who graduate from toll to in-house production.
